The Wickford Art Association is presenting a unique blending of two art forms at its 7th Annual Poetry and Art. The opening reception is on Friday, September 13, 2019 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at 36 Beach Street, North Kingstown, RI.

The exhibit runs through October 6th, and is free and open to the public.

This year’s theme is “Harmony”. Nearly 200 pieces of fine art were submitted for jury of which juror Berge Zobian, owner of Gallery Z in Providence, selected forty-one pieces for inclusion. Kim Baker juried the poets. Each piece of art was paired with a poet who then composed a poem, drawing inspiration from the artwork or “ekphrasis” - writing inspired by art. Neither the artists nor the poets know who they have been paired with – that will be revealed at the reception on September 13th in which we expect over 300 people to attend.  Artwork and poems will be hung side by side in the gallery and every poem will be read in a beautiful outdoor setting under a tent on Narragansett Bay.

A professionally designed, limited edition book cataloguing the accepted artwork and responsive poetry has been published. The book will be available for sale at the Wickford Art Association’s gallery and website for $25 after September 13, 2019.

March is Youth Art Month and in celebration, The Wickford Art Association (WAA) will present its annual Scholarship Fund awards to three Rhode Island public high school senior art students with a fourth award presented by the Rhode Island Art Educators Association in March.

Each Rhode Island public high school chooses one college-bound senior art student for consideration. The competition uses National Scholastic Standards overseen by the Rhode Island Art Educators Association. The four winning students will receive cash scholarships in the amounts of $1,500, $1,000, $500 and with a fourth award from Rhode Island Art Education Association of $500 to use towards college. Winners also receive a one-year membership to WAA, a fine art exhibit in our gallery and exhibit space at the 57th Wickford Art Festival, ranked the #7 fine art festival in the country. This is an excellent, resume-building opportunity for college bound students. Interested students should speak with their art teachers about submitting their portfolio for consideration.

The 2019 WAA Scholarship Program application may be downloaded at http://wickfordart.org/scholarship-program-exhibit-and-awards-ceremony/
Application submission period ends February 21, 2019.

The 57th Wickford Art Festival is July 13 and 14, 2019. The festival experience will help build the winners’ resume and teach them the business side of art, including preparing, exhibiting and selling their artwork to approximately 60,000 festival attendees and providing the opportunity to meet other professional artists and art collectors.

Call for Artists and Poets

2/15/2018

The Wickford Art Association (WAA) is presenting a unique blending of two art forms at its 6th Annual Poetry and Art Show with a theme based on its mission statement of “Educate, Encourage and Inspire”. The Call for Artists and Call for Poets is now open to fine art artists and poets with a submission deadline of April 8, 2018. The Call for Artists and Call for Poets may be downloaded from www.wickfordart.org

This year, WAA is introducing an exciting reversal to the exhibit process. First, a jury committee will select 40 original, unpublished poems based upon the theme. Artists will also be chosen by jury based upon a portfolio of their work. Both artists and poets are juried anonymously. The poems will then be assigned to selected artists who will create original works of art, inspired by these poems. A limited edition, full-color book cataloging the exhibit will be published. One of the premiere poetry libraries in the country, The Poets House in New York City has accepted the 2018 Poetry & Art book for its library collection.

Heightening the excitement for this annual exhibit, poets and artists will not meet until just prior to the opening reception, held on September 14, 2018 at 6:30 PM at the Wickford Art Association. Poetry readings and related events will take place during the reception and the exhibit. The Poetry and Art exhibit will run from September 14 to October 14, 2018 and attendance to the reception and exhibit is free and open to the public.

The Wickford Art Association is a non-profit organization with over 450 members from Rhode Island and New England. The association hosts art shows and classes in its gallery at 36 Beach Street in North Kingstown, and has produced the Wickford Art Festival every July since 1962.  Wickford Art Association is dedicated to educating, encouraging and inspiring artists and art lovers throughout the community.

Wickford Art Association is located at 36 Beach Street in North Kingstown, RI. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 - 3:00 PM and Sunday noon to 3:00 PM. For more information, call (401) 294-6840 or visit www.wickfordart.org
