Music Festivals in Maryland

4/30/2019

Picture
You live in or near Maryland, you love listening to music and you’re wondering if there are any music festivals in the area that you could attend in 2019? Unfortunately (if you missed them), some fine music festivals in Maryland have already taken place during the first four months of 2019. The top one among them is Baltimore’s Frozen Harbor Music Festival, whose attendees could enjoy the performances of popular acts such as Method Man & Redman and Less than Jake. However, if you missed the Frozen Harbor festival, don’t despair, as there’s plenty more to come in the following months. However, some of these festivals are yet to announce their lineups. That’s why we have chosen to focus only on the three high-quality festivals that will be held in Maryland during the next two months.

Maryland Deathfest (May 23-26)

The first festival that we will talk about is called Maryland Deathfest. This May, fans of extreme metal music will have a great opportunity to enjoy seeing some of the best bands in the genre. The Maryland Deathfest has been going strong since 2003. Over time, the organizers have expanded the festival to also include events in California, Quebec and the Netherlands. This is not surprising because Deathfest is without question one of the most attractive music festivals in Maryland when it comes to heavy metal music. Not only can you have fun there while listening to great metal bands, but this festival can also be useful for you in other ways. Namely, while it is known that music generally affects exercise motivation, this is even truer when it comes to metal music. If you like mosh pits, you’ll have a good time while exercising at the same time.

Every year, some big names headline this festival. Among quite a few acclaimed bands that will play there this year, we’ll single out Church of Misery, Anaal Nathrakh and Benediction. Hailing from Japan, the Church of Misery is one of today’s top doom metal acts. Similarly to a huge majority of other doom metal bands, the members of Church of Misery have been inspired by the music of early Black Sabbath and psychedelic rock. This band has existed for 24 years now, releasing six full-length albums.

Deathfest is one of the best music festivals in Maryland when it comes to metal music.
Anaal Nathrakh is known for its unique mixture of death metal, grindcore and black metal. This British band was created in 1999, and its members have since released 10 studio albums. While the first word of the name of this band might cause some people to wonder whether the name has something to do with a certain part of human anatomy, it was actually derived from an old incantation and has rather mystical qualities.
Benediction is another British band that will play at Maryland Deathfest this year. Ever since its inception in 1989, Benediction has been one of the most acclaimed death metal bands in existence. They have released seven studio albums, and its members continue to successfully tour the world. Apart from these bands, if you’re in Maryland in May, you can also hear other well-known metal bands such as Deicide, Fleshcrawl and Voivod. This may not be enough to justify moving to Maryland in order to easily see all these great metal bands, but it does come close (and if you are considering moving to Maryland, you should know that allstatemoving.net is the best company for the move).

DelFest (May 23-26)

If you’re not a fan of metal music, there’s another music festival in Maryland that’s held at the same time. We’re talking about a festival called DelFest. This festival will be held at the scenic Allegany County Fairgrounds in Cumberland. If you live in Baltimore or D.C, it will take you about two and a half hours to get there by car. DelFest is aimed at the entire family. Its visitors can expect to have a peaceful, relaxing time while listening to American roots music. If you have a family, DelFest could easily become one of your favorite music festivals in Maryland (if it isn't already). And if moving to Maryland with your family is a thing that you plan to do, then be sure to check out this festival!

One of the defining characteristics of DelFest is that it is designed as a special tribute to the famous bluegrass musician Del McCoury. If you don’t know what bluegrass is, here’s a quick explanation. Bluegrass is a form of American roots music that has originated during the 1940s. It takes its influence from old British ballads and dance tunes, as well as from blues and jazz. This makes for a unique sound that has been described as being ’’lonesome’’. Bluegrass songs are usually played with acoustic string instruments, and they have been known to feature high levels of energy. Bluegrass musicians often take turns soloing on their respective instruments, while the rest of the band provides rhythmic backing.

Of course, Del McCoury and his band will be playing at DelFest this year. This makes DelFest one of the best music festivals in Maryland for all bluegrass lovers. While Mr. McCoury has been known for a long time as one of the premier bluegrass acts (he started his band in 1967), he was recently in the spotlight for winning a Grammy Award for his 2013 bluegrass album The Streets of Baltimore. In total, he has received astounding 14 Grammy Award nominations during the years. He also won a Grammy in 2005 for his album The Company We Keep. Apart from The Del McCoury Band, if you visit DelFest this year you’ll also be able to hear groups such as The String Cheese Incident, Trampled By Turtles and Railroad Earth.

Capital Jazz Festival (June 7-9)

Finally, we’ll cover one more festival (and if that isn’t enough for you, check out our article on three more East Coast music festivals that you shouldn’t miss). The 27th Annual Capital Jazz Festival is a must-see festival for all fans of jazz music. Featuring a range of well-known and critically acclaimed jazz musicians, the Capital Jazz Festival should please a variety of tastes when it comes to jazz. If you like this kind of music and you don’t have any obligations that you can’t get out of on June 7–9, then this is probably just the festival for you!

One of the biggest names to play at this year’s Capital Jazz Festival is Gladys Knight. Nicknamed ’’the Empress of Soul’’, this singer/songwriter has won a huge number of accolades over the years. This underlines the huge amount of respect that fans of jazz and soul have for Mrs. Knight. She has won the Grammy Award seven times, and two of her songs have topped the Billboard Hot 10 list of singles (’’That’s What Friends are For’’ and ’’Midnight Train to Georgia’’).

Another renowned musician playing at the Capital Jazz Festival this year is Gregory Porter. After releasing his first two albums, Mr. Porter landed a record deal with the famous Blue Note Records. His first album with this label, entitled Liquid Spirit, has earned him a Grammy Award in 2014. Three years later, he received the same award for his album named Take Me to the Alley. Fans of jazz, blues, soul and gospel have come to love Porter for his specific mixture of these genres.

Some other music festivals in Maryland

While 2019 may not be the most revolutionary year in music, with such great music festivals in Maryland during the next three months only, we can’t complain too much. We have already mentioned that there are more appealing festivals in Maryland being held towards the end of the year. Here are some of them:
  • AFRAM a.k.a. African American Festival
  • Shadow Woods Metal Fest
  • Boondocks Music Festival
  • Beauty in the Backyard
  • The U+Nfest
Whatever your taste in music is, you’ll probably find at least one or two appealing music festivals in Maryland. Whether you live in Maryland or traveling to a festival in MD is not a problem for you, you’ll almost certainly find at least one or two events that suit your taste in music. There are many high-quality music festivals in Maryland, and we’re confident that you’ll find the right one. Have fun!

Garage-pop band Super Cassette Release “Better In Reverse”

4/14/2019

California’s garage-pop/indie rock band Super Cassette dropped a brand new single and accompanying music video, titled “Better In Reverse“. With lush, jangle-pop melodies, a bit of fuzzy, over-driven guitar, and layers of harmonic vocals, the band builds a relaxed yet forward-moving and hook-laden pop tune. A closer listen to the lyrics reveals a jump into dark introspection, questioning the actions of humans – and wondering if everything would be ‘better in reverse’.

“It laments mankind’s unfortunate tendency to just ruin things over time – whether it be personal relationships, the social/political climate, or the planet (especially in this age of apparent dystopia),” shared vocalist vocalist/guitarist Max Gerlock. While the lyrics apply to all scales of humanity, the track’s origins were sparked very close to home. “The first lyric and melody surprisingly came to me in their entirety during a road trip. Our band is fronted by me and my twin brother, Nick, and in that moment I was reflecting of a particular memory where I was very intoxicated and ended up just treating Nick like garbage. The line – ‘You were my brother, but we killed each other’ – how can you more succinctly summarize humankind’s tendency to betray itself? Why do we treat each other poorly, even when we’re in the same family?”

The lyrics go on to subtly nod towards humankind’s damage and destructive actions – citing the manufacturing of weapons, ruining of world and natural wonders, and hurt to fellow friends and family. It’s brought full circle by proposing how different – and better – the world might be if we could hit reverse. The take-away boils down to the fact that each of our choices a major impact on others – and unfortunately, our world has no reverse button, so it’s up to us to think ahead.

The accompanying music video provides a heavy dose of 90’s nostalgia, pairing perfectly with the band’s crunchy-smooth sound. B-movie inspiration lends a sweet-sour combination of gore and notes of comical relief. Gerlock shared that the video concept came to him in a dream – where he was explaining the nearly full-fleshed video idea to his bandmates – enacting the of killing of each one in anger, and bringing them back to life by hitting rewind, when he realizes his mistake. The band worked with videographer Nick Troughton, and shot locally in Oakland.

“Better In Reverse” was self-recorded, mixed and mastered by the band. It is their first release since 2017’s EP Cathode Ray Tube; several further singles are expected in coming months, leading up to the band’s first first full-length release, due out by end of the year. “Better In Reverse” is available on all major digital platforms today including Spotify, Bandcamp, and Apple Music.

ABOUT SUPER CASSETTE:

Super Cassette is an Oakland garage-pop band built around the guitar and vocal harmonies of two brothers. The band formed when Max Gerlock assembled a group to play his solo project, Maximillian, live. Their first show went so well that it became obvious the project should be transitioned into a full-fledged band rather than a solo effort. Plus, Max and his brother (and co-frontman) Nick had been meaning to pursue a project together in earnest for years, but didn’t have the time to until graduating college. Once bassist Devin Hollister and drummer Aziz Yehia were on board, they knew they had something special.
Super Cassette blends lush, jangly pop songs with the manic, brooding energy of overdriven guitars and untethered vocals, yet their explosive moments are earned by the contrast of spacey, introspective sections throughout their music.
Off the heels of their last EP, Cathode Ray Tube,  and a few west coast tours, Super Cassette is gearing up to deliver several singles, leading up to their first full-length release at the end of this year.

5 Best Live Music Venues in NYC

Visit dumbomoving.com and search for moving services that you might need in order to relocate to NYC without any problem. Every professional moving company has well-trained workers and years of experience. Other than that, they will provide plenty of moving services too! Now, let's go back to the best live music venues in NYC!

So, if you want to go to NYC and visit some of the best live music venues, these are the best places that we can recommend!
  • The Brooklyn Bowl
  • Radio City Music Hall
  • The Beacon Theatre
  • Lincoln Center of the Performing Arts
  • The Bitter End

There are many places for good, live, music but these 5 stand out!

When searching for the best live music venues in NYC, The Brooklyn Bowl stands out for several reasons. First, it was named as the 20th best music club in the entire U.S., by the Rolling Stone magazine. Second, it is the holder of the first ever LEED certification for its bowling alley. As if the music and bowling were not enough, there are also two bars, a restaurant and spacious seating space.

If you end up visiting The Brooklyn Bowl, you just have to try the tap beers that you can only find in Brooklyn and nowhere else. The Brooklyn Bowl, in fact, sells only the local brews. Be sure to try them out when you visit!

As for its music, there are many famous names that have performed at this venue. Artists such as Kanye West, Lauryn Hill, Animal Collective and many more have made their appearances. If these names just made you remember a song you like and want to hear it again, without waiting, you can use our song request service.

Radio City Music Hall:

Radio City Music Hall is the most famous music venue in the whole world. It is located in the Rockefeller Center and it was the most visited place in NYC. Established and opened in 1932 and offered high-class entertainments ever since. In 1979, management wanted to renovate and make an office space instead of Radio City Music Hall, but public outcry and other smaller organizations saved this legendary place! In 1980, this place gets renovated and reopened to the public.

Also, let's not forget that Radio City Music Hall was a host to some of the greatest and famous events such as MTV Video Music Awards, Grammy Awards, Tony Awards and, of course, America’s Got Talent! Speaking of Tony, you can check our own Tony in his "The Tony Jones Show", where he talks and rocks with the best of them! You can always visit Radio City Music Hall online, as well, grab tickets and check their performance schedule.

The Beacon Theatre:

This marvelous place was designed by Samuel "Roxy" Rothafel, a famous theatrical visionary before he worked on the Radio City Music Hall. He wanted to make The Beacon into an International music hall. The style of The Beacon Theatre draws heavily from the "Deco" style of art and it opened its doors to the public way back in 1929. There have been many entertainment shows since, such as operas, silent movies, and even vaudeville. But, perhaps the greatest fact about the theatre is that it became a national landmark in 1979.

As for the names that performed there, the list is almost overwhelming. Queen, Michael Jackson, Aerosmith, and Radiohead all performed there at some point, along with many more famous names.

Somewhat recently renovated, in 2006, The Beacon Theatre proudly stands as one of the 5 best live music venues in NYC today, hosting stars such as Damien Rice and Diana Krall.

Lincoln Center of the Performing Arts:

This beautiful complex is placed in the center of NYC and it sits on 16.3 acres. This is one of the nicest performing art venues and includes New York State Theater, Avery Fisher Hall and Metropolitan Opera House. Also, it is home to NYC's most established and oldest performing companies. The goal of conceiving Lincoln Center of the Performing Arts was to bring all the best-performing companies and unite them into one place. Lincoln Center of the Performing arts is home to Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera and The New York Philharmonic.

If you want to take in everything that this center has to offer, you would need a lifetime! Except for the Opera, here, all forms of music are explored, from American Jazz to Japanese kabuki!

The Bitter End:

This club is established in 1961 and it still holds the title of the "oldest rock club" in New York City! This is an iconic red-brick backdrop as the legendary acts that have been performed here for years. This is the place where Pete Seeger, Randy Newman, Paul and Mary, and Isley Brothers were discovered. At that time the owner of this famous bar was Fred Weintraub, the great Hollywood Producer.

The Bitter End is located exactly in the center of Greenwich Village. The bar is opened nightly and if you want to have some fun and listen to good live music, this is the place for you! If you want to hear some rock, blues, jazz, funk, hip-hop, country, alternative and any other kind of music, you should visit The Bitter End. However, Monday and every other Saturday is the time for new, unknown stars to show what they know! You can perform too!

Prom Dress Giveaway

4/7/2019

Picture
With the goal of giving young ladies who are in need a helping hand with their prom season preparations, an annual prom dress giveaway will take place on Tuesday, April 9th 2019 from 2-4 p.m. at the Mind and Body Studios, 100 Factory St., West Warwick, RI.
The dresses will be given out on the “no questions asked” basis, to anyone who can't afford to buy one of their own.

Also, although this event is being held in West Warwick, those from neighboring communities, and all over Rhode Island are welcome to attend.
The organizers are also accepting donations during the event and have a specific need for jewelry donations.

I recently asked event founder Kelly Carlini how the now 4 year old event first began, she tells me:

“Several years ago I realized that there wasn't a prom dress giveaway servicing the needs of Kent County kids and decided it was time that there was one. I asked my friend Mary Bradshaw of the Mind and Body Studios if she would like to partner up for it and use her Zumba studio - she said absolutely and we're now in our 4th year. We have several hundred dresses, loads of shoes and every year we help 50-75 young ladies find dresses.”

More information about the giveaway can be found on Facebook: Here
