The Gnarbequeo or GBQ Music Festival You might not have heard of performers like Del & The Wave or RADATTACK and that's the point. It's important that the alternative scene has its place. And this festival has just made that possible. It started as an event by an alternative band with a basement as a stage and a barbecue in the backyard. Now, The Gnarbeque or GBQ offers performers of very different genres to perform and show their art. The goal is to have a diverse loving community. What? Maryland Deathfest (May 23-26) The first festival that we will talk about is called Maryland Deathfest. This May, fans of extreme metal music will have a great opportunity to enjoy seeing some of the best bands in the genre. The Maryland Deathfest has been going strong since 2003. Over time, the organizers have expanded the festival to also include events in California, Quebec and the Netherlands. This is not surprising because Deathfest is without question one of the most attractive music festivals in Maryland when it comes to heavy metal music. Not only can you have fun there while listening to great metal bands, but this festival can also be useful for you in other ways. Namely, while it is known that music generally affects exercise motivation, this is even truer when it comes to metal music. If you like mosh pits, you’ll have a good time while exercising at the same time. Every year, some big names headline this festival. Among quite a few acclaimed bands that will play there this year, we’ll single out Church of Misery, Anaal Nathrakh and Benediction. Hailing from Japan, the Church of Misery is one of today’s top doom metal acts. Similarly to a huge majority of other doom metal bands, the members of Church of Misery have been inspired by the music of early Black Sabbath and psychedelic rock. This band has existed for 24 years now, releasing six full-length albums. Deathfest is one of the best music festivals in Maryland when it comes to metal music. Anaal Nathrakh is known for its unique mixture of death metal, grindcore and black metal. This British band was created in 1999, and its members have since released 10 studio albums. While the first word of the name of this band might cause some people to wonder whether the name has something to do with a certain part of human anatomy, it was actually derived from an old incantation and has rather mystical qualities. Benediction is another British band that will play at Maryland Deathfest this year. Ever since its inception in 1989, Benediction has been one of the most acclaimed death metal bands in existence. They have released seven studio albums, and its members continue to successfully tour the world. Apart from these bands, if you’re in Maryland in May, you can also hear other well-known metal bands such as Deicide, Fleshcrawl and Voivod.This may not be enough to justify moving to Maryland in order to easily see all these great metal bands, but it does come close (and if you are considering moving to Maryland, you should know that allstatemoving.net is the best company for the move). DelFest (May 23-26) If you’re not a fan of metal music, there’s another music festival in Maryland that’s held at the same time. We’re talking about a festival called DelFest. This festival will be held at the scenic Allegany County Fairgrounds in Cumberland. If you live in Baltimore or D.C, it will take you about two and a half hours to get there by car. DelFest is aimed at the entire family. Its visitors can expect to have a peaceful, relaxing time while listening to American roots music. If you have a family, DelFest could easily become one of your favorite music festivals in Maryland (if it isn't already). And if moving to Maryland with your family is a thing that you plan to do, then be sure to check out this festival! One of the defining characteristics of DelFest is that it is designed as a special tribute to the famous bluegrass musician Del McCoury. If you don’t know what bluegrass is, here’s a quick explanation. Bluegrass is a form of American roots music that has originated during the 1940s. It takes its influence from old British ballads and dance tunes, as well as from blues and jazz. This makes for a unique sound that has been described as being ’’lonesome’’. Bluegrass songs are usually played with acoustic string instruments, and they have been known to feature high levels of energy. Bluegrass musicians often take turns soloing on their respective instruments, while the rest of the band provides rhythmic backing. Of course, Del McCoury and his band will be playing at DelFest this year. This makes DelFest one of the best music festivals in Maryland for all bluegrass lovers. While Mr. McCoury has been known for a long time as one of the premier bluegrass acts (he started his band in 1967), he was recently in the spotlight for winning a Grammy Award for his 2013 bluegrass album The Streets of Baltimore. In total, he has received astounding 14 Grammy Award nominations during the years. He also won a Grammy in 2005 for his album The Company We Keep. Apart from The Del McCoury Band, if you visit DelFest this year you’ll also be able to hear groups such as The String Cheese Incident, Trampled By Turtles and Railroad Earth. Capital Jazz Festival (June 7-9) Finally, we’ll cover one more festival (and if that isn’t enough for you, check out our article on three more East Coast music festivals that you shouldn’t miss). The 27th Annual Capital Jazz Festival is a must-see festival for all fans of jazz music. Featuring a range of well-known and critically acclaimed jazz musicians, the Capital Jazz Festival should please a variety of tastes when it comes to jazz. If you like this kind of music and you don’t have any obligations that you can’t get out of on June 7–9, then this is probably just the festival for you! One of the biggest names to play at this year’s Capital Jazz Festival is Gladys Knight. Nicknamed ’’the Empress of Soul’’, this singer/songwriter has won a huge number of accolades over the years. This underlines the huge amount of respect that fans of jazz and soul have for Mrs. Knight. She has won the Grammy Award seven times, and two of her songs have topped the Billboard Hot 10 list of singles (’’That’s What Friends are For’’ and ’’Midnight Train to Georgia’’). Another renowned musician playing at the Capital Jazz Festival this year is Gregory Porter. After releasing his first two albums, Mr. Porter landed a record deal with the famous Blue Note Records. His first album with this label, entitled Liquid Spirit, has earned him a Grammy Award in 2014. Three years later, he received the same award for his album named Take Me to the Alley. Fans of jazz, blues, soul and gospel have come to love Porter for his specific mixture of these genres.
