WaterFire Announces the Addition of Two Full Lightings & One Partial Lighting to the 2022 Season

WaterFire Providence is pleased to announce the addition of two Full Lighting and one Partial Lighting of WaterFire to the 2022 WaterFire Season in October.

On October 1, 2022, there will be a Full Lighting of WaterFire supported by YPO Gold New England; on October 7, 2022, there will be a Partial Lighting of WaterFire in Memorial Park supported by Rhode Island School of Design to welcome their new president Crystal Williams; on October 22, 2022, there will be a Full Lighting of WaterFire supported by Brown University celebrating 50 Years of Medicine at Brown.

The addition of these lightings to the 2022 WaterFire Season brings the total number of full lightings to 9 and a total 8 partial lightings.

WaterFire Providence – 14th Annual Flames of Hope - Full Lighting Details

Providence, RI: WaterFire Providence announces the details for the Arts and Health Series || Flames of Hope: A Celebration of Life™ full lighting on Saturday, October 5, 2019. This lighting is sponsored in part by the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. Sunset is at 6:21 pm and the fires will remain lit until 11:00 pm. The lighting ceremony on October 5 will consist of two parts. One-half of the braziers in the Waterplace Park Basin along with all of the rest of the braziers throughout the installation be lit starting at 20 minutes after sunset (6:41 pm). The second half of the braziers in the Basin will be lit starting just after 7:00 pm to coincide with the arrival Illuminations of Life Ceremony torches.

Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation – Flames of Hope Celebration Village in Station Park The Illuminations of Life Torch Ceremony will begin on the Statehouse steps at sunset and the torches will arrive in Waterplace Park Basin approximately 40 minutes later. Half of the braziers in the Waterplace Park Basin will remain unlit until approximately an hour past sunset. At this time the Illumination of Life 150-person torch procession will arrive in the basin from Station Park leading into a Ring of Fire and the remaining fires will be lit.

Once a year, tens of thousands of people gather to light the way towards hope and healing for anyone touched by breast cancer. Gloria Gemma’s Flames of Hope: A Celebration of Life™ was created to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month by turning the city of Providence PINK and sparking a movement to inspire awareness, compassion, and support. This weekend-long celebration embraces everyone who has been impacted by cancer.

There are a variety of activities happening in Station Park as part of the Gloria Gemma foundation's Flames of Hope a Celebration of Life™ event. Details can be found on their website at https://www.gloriagemma.org/flames-of-hope.

The WaterFire Arts Festival Plaza, in partnership with Bryce Studio, is happening again on Washington and Steeple Streets from 5:00 - 10:30 pm. This outdoor artisan fair will showcase some of the great artwork created in Rhode Island featuring mediums such as glass, photography, sculpture, jewelry and more. The WaterFire Arts Festival Plaza will offer visitors the opportunity to support the local arts economy by purchasing work by Rhode Island-based artists. From 5:30 - 9:30 pm the Steeple Street Music Stage will feature musicians from The Pump House Music Works Open Mic Series featuring Lily Rhodes, Morgan Piatek, Tim Larson & Devin Bender. 

Visit the WaterFire Marketplace on Canal Street and help light up Providence. Support WaterFire with a donation or a purchase of locally designed apparel, glassware, and gifts. Pin where you are from on Map Center’s maps and watch glass blowing by Gather Glass.  Dream Orbs on the Bridge of Stars in Waterplace Park. From sunset until 10:00 make a wish and add your light to the night by releasing a glowing blue or pink orb into the waters of Providence's rivers.

WaterFire Signature Performers & Attractions will include:
  • Sunset - 10:00 PM || A Silent Soapbox living statue performer at the corner of Washington Street Bridge and Canal Walk
  • Sunset - 10:00 PM || Aqua Carta living statue performer on Steeple Street 
  • Sunset - 10:00 PM || Spogga, fire performances along the river
There will be a First Aid Station located on College Street with care provided by the University of Rhode Island’s Emergency Medical Services.  Please note: 
  • Due to re-seeding operations on the lawn in Memorial Park, there will not be any Starry, Starry Night installation at this lighting. 
  • The WaterFire Walking Tour Program has been concluded for the 2019 season. There will not be any tours available for the remainder of our 2019 schedule.

WaterFire Providence - September 14th Full Lighting

Providence, RI: WaterFire Providence announces the details for the full lighting on Saturday, September 14, 2019. sponsored in part by Alkermes; the Rhode Island Department of Behavioral Health, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals; and Rally 4 Recovery RI; in partnership with the RI Department of Health; and the RI Department of Corrections. With additional support from Gilead, CVS, Rhode Island PBS, and CODAC Behavioral Healthcare. Sunset is at 6:57 pm. The fires will be lit shortly thereafter and burn until midnight. The Rally 4 Recovery celebrations at Turk’s Head Plaza will open at 4:00 pm and include Arts Fairs, Food Vendors, and Special Performances with other events starting at 5:00 pm. In respect to the Recovery Month celebration, this WaterFire lighting is being presented as a dry event. On behalf of all of those in recovery, WaterFire Providence thanks you for your support and understanding.

WaterFire for Recovery – National Recovery Month 30th-Anniversary Celebration – 4:00 pm in Turk’s Head PlazaThis year is the 30th anniversary of National Recovery Month, Rally 4 Recovery RI has partnered with WaterFire Providence to host an honorary WaterFire lighting on September 14th that will include a rally held in the Turks Head Plaza of downtown Providence. The rally will start at 4:00 pm and will feature different food vendors, resource tents, and non-profits who will provide information on addiction and recovery. The rally will conclude at sunset with a procession to the river and lighting of the fires. The resource fair and live music will go throughout the night, continuing to make it a destination for visitors. 

On the night of September 14, there will be no alcoholic beverages served because we are committed to standing behind those in recovery.

WaterFire Walking Tours, take a walking tour with our knowledgeable interns and volunteers to get an inside look into the history, theory of design and management of WaterFire. Tours begin at 3:00, 4:00 and 5:00 pm; book now by making a reservation waterfire.org/walkingtours. For a donation of $15 registrants will walk the length of the canal with a tour guide and land at the basin just in time for the lighting.

The park will be aglow with hanging blue stars and a constellation of twinkling luminaria candle lanterns below.

WaterFire Signature Performers & Attractions will include:
  • At the World War I monument in Memorial Park, Ten31 Productions will return with their interactive living statues and gargoyles in Memorial Park shortly after lighting.
  • The Steeple Street Unplugged Stage returns with a mix of country and rock by musician Brian McKenzie with three sets starting at 6:30 pm.
  • On Washington Street, the living statue Lily the Lady White from A Silent Soapbox will be interacting with the crowd.
  • Direct from New Orleans, fire dancer Spogga will dazzle the crowds during several performances throughout the evening at the confluence and on the wall of braziers in Memorial Park.
  • Origami Master Andrew Anselmo will delight the crowd in Market Square (near the RISD auditorium).
  • Sidewalk Astronomy will offer visitors the opportunity to learn about the stars and planets in the sky. Stop by their learning lab on the riverwalk near College Street.

Providence, RI: WaterFire Providence announces the details for the full lighting on Saturday, June 22, 2019. The full lighting is sponsored in part by Cox Business. Sunset is at 8:24 pm. The fires will be lit shortly thereafter and burn until midnight.

The WaterFire Music Stage on Steeple Street will feature Hollow Turtle, “they bring a ruckus to a traditional bluegrass style while tying it all together with tightly wound vocal harmonies...” Hollow Turtle is Alfie Purcell, acoustic guitar; Joe Cappelletti, upright bass; Nick Preite, mandolin; and James Cappelletti & Ben Richard on fiddle. Performances will start at 6:30 pm.

WaterFire Providence Announces the Preliminary 2019 Schedule

WaterFire Providence announces its inaugural #Art4Impact series of events.  

The #Art4Impact series will include three themed series of WaterFire lightings and events with each series highlighting community milestones, challenges or issues that WaterFire has been helping celebrate or raise awareness of with community partners over its first 24 years.

“Most people think of WaterFire as a beautiful event that transforms downtown Providence and brings together tens of thousands of people to experience art together; however, WaterFire is that but much more,” said Peter A. Mello, managing director, and coCEO. “WaterFire’s economic, cultural and community impacts are all critically important to Rhode Island and the #Art4Impact series will help us tell the stories that will give people a better understanding of the power of art in transforming and building our community.”

In addition to the #Art4Impact series, WaterFire will start the 2019 season with a basin lighting on Thursday, May 23 for the National Association of State Treasurers Treasury Management Training Symposium and the first full lighting of the season will be Saturday, June 22 sponsored in part by Cox. At the time of this announcement, there will be eight full lightings and one basin lighting in 2019 with more lightings added as funding becomes available.
