Providence, RI: WaterFire Providence announces the details for the Arts and Health Series || Flames of Hope: A Celebration of Life™ full lighting on Saturday, October 5, 2019. This lighting is sponsored in part by the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. Sunset is at 6:21 pm and the fires will remain lit until 11:00 pm. The lighting ceremony on October 5 will consist of two parts. One-half of the braziers in the Waterplace Park Basin along with all of the rest of the braziers throughout the installation be lit starting at 20 minutes after sunset (6:41 pm). The second half of the braziers in the Basin will be lit starting just after 7:00 pm to coincide with the arrival Illuminations of Life Ceremony torches. Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation – Flames of Hope Celebration Village in Station Park The Illuminations of Life Torch Ceremony will begin on the Statehouse steps at sunset and the torches will arrive in Waterplace Park Basin approximately 40 minutes later. Half of the braziers in the Waterplace Park Basin will remain unlit until approximately an hour past sunset. At this time the Illumination of Life 150-person torch procession will arrive in the basin from Station Park leading into a Ring of Fire and the remaining fires will be lit. Once a year, tens of thousands of people gather to light the way towards hope and healing for anyone touched by breast cancer. Gloria Gemma’s Flames of Hope: A Celebration of Life™ was created to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month by turning the city of Providence PINK and sparking a movement to inspire awareness, compassion, and support. This weekend-long celebration embraces everyone who has been impacted by cancer. There are a variety of activities happening in Station Park as part of the Gloria Gemma foundation's Flames of Hope a Celebration of Life™ event. The rally will start at 4:00 pm and will feature different food vendors, resource tents, and non-profits who will provide information on addiction and recovery. The rally will conclude at sunset with a procession to the river and lighting of the fires. The resource fair and live music will go throughout the night, continuing to make it a destination for visitors. On the night of September 14, there will be no alcoholic beverages served because we are committed to standing behind those in recovery. WaterFire Walking Tours, take a walking tour with our knowledgeable interns and volunteers to get an inside look into the history, theory of design and management of WaterFire. The #Art4Impact series will include three themed series of WaterFire lightings and events with each series highlighting community milestones, challenges or issues that WaterFire has been helping celebrate or raise awareness of with community partners over its first 24 years. “Most people think of WaterFire as a beautiful event that transforms downtown Providence and brings together tens of thousands of people to experience art together; however, WaterFire is that but much more,” said Peter A.
