Perot was invited to participate with poll numbers between 8-10% --- well below the current published numbers of Gov. Gary Johnson . "Texas billionaire Ross Perot had a third seat at the commission’s 1992 debates. At the time, Perot was polling around 8%, according to a Times Mirror poll." Gallup as well had Perot polling below 10% at the time that the CPD extended their invitation to participate in the presidential debates. This year, Nielson notes, "polling currently shows the Johnson-Weld campaign at 13% according to a recent Quinnipiac University study, 12% on the Sept 2IBD/TIPP survey and around 10% with the sanctioned CPD polls." Also, Johnson-Weld support reaches 15% or higher in 15 states, according to a Washington Post survey. In the WSJ oped, Nielson reminds that the CPD’s stated “primary purpose is to ‘provide the best possible information to viewers and listeners’ through presidential and vice-presidential debates,” noting that it “plans to ignore a candidate whom 62% of American voters want to see in a debate, according to an August survey from Quinnipiac University.” Concluded Nielson: “The debates are a national platform that Americans need to evaluate presidential character, honesty and temperament on stage. For millions of Americans, it will be the first time that they deeply study their choices for president. But why should debates serve only the interests of two parties, especially when a 38% plurality of Americans identify as political independents? Unless viable third-party candidates are included, the views of millions of Americans will go unrepresented.” FULL TEXT of Nielson's WSJ oped here: http://www.wsj.com/articles/bring-out-a-third-lectern-for-gary-johnson-1473981809 ![]() Providence, RI -- Following yesterday's release of EXETER's top-rated score of +19.37 by its delegation, consisting of Representatives Price and Costa, and Senator Morgan, was higher than the General Assembly's overall score of negative (-54.1). During the 2016 legislative session, the Exeter lawmakers generally voted to advance freedom in the Ocean State. Sen. Elaine J. Morgan (R) of district 34 in Exeter scored a +23.73 overall on the 2016 Freedom Index, while Rep. Doreen Costa (R) scored a +20.8 and Rep. Justin Price(R) scored a +13.60. Conversely, NEWPORT's score of (-68.5) by its delegation of Representatives Carson and Abney, and Senators Paiva Weed and DiPalma. was worst in the state in 2016, reducing the freedom of Rhode Islanders. Rep. Lauren Carson (D, district 75) scored a (-67.8), while Rep. Marvin Abney (D, district 73) scored a (-67.8), Sen. Teresa Paiva Weed (D, district 13), scored a (-68.4), and Sen. Louis DiPalma (D, district 12) scored a (-71.2). TOP-3, BOTTOM-5. Joining Exeter as the only 3 towns to achieve a positive score was Richmond and Chareleston. In addition to Newport, the bottom five towns werePawtucket, East Providence, Providence, and Jamestown, all of which are part of the 16 cities and town that scored below the average General Assembly score. On the main RIFreedom.org/FreedomIndex home page, voters have access to a multitude of data and tools ![]() This coming fall you and I (and every person in all 50 states and Washington DC) will have the opportunity to vote for Gary Johnson in our state and as such I think that it's very important that we get a chance to see him in the nation debates along with the Republican and Democrat candidate. Currently the Congressional Debate Commission is using a standard of being over 15% in the polls, but that is a very flawed metric. The question that is asked is "If the election were held today, who would you vote for?" That question is DESIGNED to not have people answer "I don't know yet" and it punishes any "new" candidate if their party does not have an established base of voters who always vote the party ticket. The question is designed to not allow people to answer "I want to know more about them and make an informed decision." Why is asking people who they would vote for RIGHT THIS SECOND considered a good way to determine who should be in the debates to inform the public? Why is the poll question trying remove the influence of the people who want to make an informed decision BASED on the debates. Similarly, if 100 people are polled and 10 of them respond that they don't know who they are voting for yet, those votes are not counted as supporting Gary Johnson specifically, even those people have specifically said they are not convinced to vote for the Republican or the Democrat. The polls should not be asking people who they would vote for. The poll question that determines who should be in the debates should read as follow: "The following candidates will be on the ballot for President in your state. Please indicate all of them that you would like to see in the debate." It's very simple -- if a poll is being used to determine who is in the debates, that poll should ask about the debates. When that question is asked, 76% of Americans respond that they would like to see Gary Johnson in the debate. Count me among that 76%. Tony Jones is the Libertarian Candidate for North Kingstown Town Council and the RI State Director for Johnson/Weld 2016 ![]() Providence, RI -- The RI Center for Freedom & Prosperity will officially object the RI DEM proposed rules - that will allow the government's environmental agency to acquire private farmland and resell it at a loss to others who will obey the state's agenda - when its CEO speaks tonight at a public comment forum at the URI Graduate School of Oceanography. With multiple concerns about property rights and local governmental sovereignty being infringed upon by this state program that was designed to advance a federal agenda, the Center's comments, to be delivered by Mike Stenhouse, will focus on the economic non-sustainability of the proposed program, at the 5:30pm DEM meeting. With government increasingly influencing and controlling the means of production through myriad tax-credit, loan, and direct subsidy schemes in a multitude of industries, this DEM farmland acquisition scheme, which will actually acquire and resell private property, is not based on any legitimate economic analysis - or any economic consideration at all - that the Center is aware of. Despite the fact that the state's own Commerce Corporate demanded a 'RhodeMapRI' mandate be inserted into the DEM plan, no economic justification was provided. "If the state of Rhode Island is truly concerned about preserving farmland and agricultural farming, it should develop policies that will make it easier and more profitable for every farmer by reducing excessive taxation and regulatory mandates," suggested Stenhouse. "There are free-market alternatives that should be considered, as opposed to this obvious lurch towards centralized-planning and further government intervention in the private sector." Stenhouse, who earned an Economics degree from Harvard University, will make a number of economic observations as objections to a plan that he will say is based on 'make believe economics' and that could lead to adverse consequences for the state's farmers and taxpayers. The Center will release a more complete version of its economic analysis tomorrow, following the meeting. ![]() August 31, 2016, Salt Lake City, UT -- Fmr. New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson - Libertarian candidate for President - issued this statement in reaction to Republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump’s speech addressing immigration policy delivered this evening in Phoenix, AZ: “Americans, and particularly Latinos, deserve better than the performance we witnessed tonight from Donald Trump. He goes to Mexico for a photo op with President Peña Nieto, claims to have a great meeting, and then flies to Phoenix to deliver the same incendiary message of nativism and divisiveness that he used to launch his campaign a year ago. He even called it a 'Great Wall'. Unbelievable. All we heard was the same worn out anti-immigrant rhetoric that too many politicians have been using for years. He proposes to perpetuate the immigration quotas that ignore realities and lie at the root of our broken immigration system. He rehashed the unworkable 'self-deportation’ idea for those millions of undocumented immigrants here already, expecting them to leave their jobs and families and return home to somehow return legally -- an idea that has been around for years and thankfully dismissed by those who actually understand how absurd it is . And, ignoring the fact that immigrants commit crimes at lower rates than any other group, he turned up the volume on the ‘blame immigrants first’ language that has derailed real immigration reform for more than decade. As for his tripled ICE deportation agents, what are they going to do? Go door-to-door in New Mexico? America won’t stand for that. Adding specifics and detail to an anti-immigrant policy does not change that policy or make it any less offensive.” |
